We wanted to share some pictures of what a family farm or business sometimes looks like. Our latest project has been building a greenhouse to use for starting seeds. We investigated prefab greenhouse kits and were not impressed with their durability or price. We priced out the lumber and realized it would be cheaper and sturdier to build our little 6′ x 12′ space ourselves.
The weather has been so nice it almost seems like a greenhouse would be unnecessary this year, but we have a feeling it will snap back cold at least one more time. But thanks to the lovely weather it is safe to bring the kids out with us while we work on many days.
We hope that early exposure to the outdoors will help our kids become instilled with a love of and respect for Mother Earth.
We used mostly 2’*4′ material to build the frame. The structure is not attached to the ground so it will be moveable. We will probably stake it down for the season just so a big wind doesn’t try to snatch it. But the lumber makes it a pretty heavy greenhouse.
We painted the wood in order to make it look nicer and last longer. Chulainn helped supervise.
We put 4 mil plastic on the frame. We will add roll up sections later to vent the space in the summer. Family farms look like a mama breastfeeding a baby while working sometimes.
We used button cap nails to attach the plastic. Here is Chulainn supervising again.
Bonus picture of our three dogs playing in the 60 degree weather at 7am this morning.
Stay tuned for updates as we finish the greenhouse, start seeds, and landscape to make the whole area look nice! We want to enjoy our space, and eventually make it welcoming for visitors and for hosting herbal medicine classes
